Boiling Water~ It's Spaghetti Night!

So I was boiling water with a little olive oil for my spaghetti pasta tonight. I have a very poorly lit kitchen. I figured this would be a great time to try to shoot manual without a flash. I took 37 pictures of this pot.... LOL... They are really out of focus and I am not sure how I could have fixed it. Here are the details, any CC is appreciated! All pictures were taken with the Canon 40D and kit lens, 28mm-135mm all at 28 mm.

#1 f/3.5 1/20 ISO 1000, I tried to lower the ISO but they were way too dark

#2 f/3.5 1/20 ISO 1000

#3 f/6.3 1/250 ISO 1000

You picked interesting circumstances to challenge yourself in! I think you wanted to torure yourself :) Way to go on getting yourself out there and trying to work it all out.
At 1/20, you are most likely going to experience camera shake without using a tripod. It is almost impossible for most people to be still enough with a shutter speed that slow and not move at all.
Remember flash is a good thing if there isn't enough light. Flash is redundant if you have lots of natural, beautiful light. Flash can even be helpful then, sometimes.
I found that when I am experimenting with something new, it's best to focus on one thing at a time. For example, finding and playing with light. Composition. focus. Manual. You kinda picked all of them in a really tough set up.
I'm not trying to beat you up; I want you to know you are making it harder on yourself then you need to.
The good news is, the pics look good, although there is some camera shake going on. Congrats for practicing! Keep going, it's worth it in the end.

Sara is right, this was too tough of conditions to try handholding the shot... you really needed to up your iso even more if you could, or you needed to use a tripod.

On another note..I LOVE LOVE LOVE your orange pot! That is awesome! :)

I think these look great. I have a hard time taking kitchen shots too. And the orange pot is so cool. I love it.

Creative take on the theme. I like how almost "rocky" the water looks on its surface as it begins to boil.

This is the kind of technical stuff I struggle with so I enjoyed reading Sara's and Jess's comments. Just want to say I love your orange pot too!

What a cool pot, mine are all boring black/gray. My favorite shot is the third one!

Sounds like you already got some great advice. Your pics are way more in focus than mine would have been at 1/20! The more we challenge ourselves, the more we will learn. Great job!
